| Services We Do Not Provide The Law Office of Vincent D. Sowerby, P.C. is a general trial practice. It is geared toward a courtroom. Mr. Sowerby does not do commercial or residential real estate closings, represent debtors in bankruptcy court, or assert claims for social security disability benefits. He does not do copyright, patent, intellectual property rights, securities, mergers, tax, environmental, or regulatory compliance. It's actually easier to list the areas of practice which Mr. Sowerby will decline than it is to list what he does do. Services We Do Provide As a general practice trial lawyer, Mr. Sowerby is prepared to enter a courtroom for almost any type of contested litigation. What he has done the most of since 1986 is torts, domestic relations and workers compensation. Second on the list would be breach of contract or criminal cases. A tort is a civil wrong. It is a violation of duty which causes harm. The vast majority of the cases listed on the page "Published Appellate Opinions" are torts. The most common torts are negligence (car crashes, slip & fall, malpractice) and fraud. Mr. Sowerby truly enjoys tort work, almost always on behalf of the injured or wronged plaintiff and sometimes on behalf of a defendant, but he has never been hired by, consulted by or paid by any insurance company. He has handled claims under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and other such "consumer" laws. He is thoroughly familiar with all aspects of probate and will write your Last Will and Testament, but only if your estate will not be subject to estate taxes. He has over twenty years experience with complex or hotly contested adoptions, divorces or custody disputes. He is thoroughly familiar with and has handled all possible types of domestic relations cases and will try to resolve your divorce without fanning the flames of hatred, discontent, vengeance and retribution as such tactics are rarely in the divorcing parties' best interests or the best interests of the children involved. While such tactics can be emotionally satisfying, you may wish to consider the consequences before you decide to scorch the earth. As you can tell from the page "Published Appellate Opinions", Mr. Sowerby is no stranger to the appeals process. He gladly accepts new cases to take up on appeal, for either side, even if he did not handle the case at the trial level, no matter whether the client hires him directly or another lawyer refers the client to Mr. Sowerby or the other lawyer associates Mr. Sowerby. Mr. Sowerby is available to assist out of town lawyers as local counsel and to assist other lawyers with brief writing or miscellaneous court appearances. |
